YOUR LOVE,
FOR PAINTINGS
Born in 1977, Gordon Nicotine-Sands is a First Nation Artist, originally from the Poundmaker Cree Nation in Saskatchewan, Canada. Gordon is of Plains Cree and Ojibway descent. "IYISINIW" ("Human" in the Plains Cree language) is a reference to Gordon's artistic influence from both traditional and contemporary backgrounds. Born and raised in the urban setting, Gordon's appreciation for his surroundings began at an early age. Sketches of common everyday media influences (comic books, cartoons, sports, etc.) typical of young boys of the era took up most of Gordon's time. Commissions began at an early age, as family, friends of family, and teachers began taking notice of Gordon's artistic ability. In his teen years, an introduction to Indiginous culture began another life-long passion of Pow-wow singing dancing and ultimately emcee work. Gordon used this influence of native culture to enhance his artwork to show strength, vulnerability, pride, and resilience. Upon graduating Art School, Gordon embarked on a series of independent show's with colleagues and friends. Gordon's technique usually focuses on a central figure(figures) to capture a glimpse of a subject's spirit in all it's powerful and raw beauty. A 'snapshot' of the spirit if you will. Gordon is a graduate of Fanshawe College's (London, Ontario) Fine Art program, and is a father to four.
